Playaway
Toy Company Incorporated and all the wonders of the Rainy Day Indoor Playground
is an outcome of the vision and dreams of four brothers who have never quite
grown up. Herbert, Gary, Scott and Troy were poor farm kids, like many
others in the area, but with a special advantage. The brothers had
individual talents that complemented each other. They learned at a young age
there was nothing they couldn't do together.
During
their childhood, the brothers created tree forts that went from tree to tree,
connected at multiple levels, and looked like a creation direct from Peters
Pan’s Lost Boys. They designed swings allowing them to jump off at a certain
height and land on the first deck of the tree fort. They had knotted swinging
ropes so you could almost make it through the woods without your feet touching
the ground. When it would rain, the creek where they swam all summer long would
overflow and the plywood battleships would come out. They held two men per ship
and were combat ready vessels complete with mud slingers. Winters were
incredible fun with the boys designing tunnels and forts that were big enough
to play hide and go seek or host a full scale snowball war.
The
pact in their adventures was always the same. No one ever, no matter what
happens, goes crying to mom and dad. All injuries and disputes were kept within
the ranks. Those days were truly the best days of their lives and they laugh
and speak of them often to this day. Norman Rockwell himself couldn't
have captured those moments, and the brothers would not have wanted
him to. It was their time. They didn't realize it as it was happening, but
those were the simple days that defined and formed them into the people
they have become. At a dinner with two authors (who thought their life
story would make a great rags-to-riches story), Gary was asked to describe
himself and his brothers. He answered by saying, " If you took the
movies Goonies, The Sand Lot, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Angels In the
Outfield, Field of Dreams and topped it off with, It's a Wonderful Life,
mixed them up in a 50 gallon drum what you would pull out is Scott,
Herbert, Troy and me.” Gary was right. They are an extremely close family, made
up of the good stuff...the simple stuff. They are still, at heart, the
same kids they were years ago and are still looking for the next
adventure.
The brothers took their love of fun and toys into their adult lives and
began designing things they wished they had when they were kids. The first
design was the Rainy Day Indoor Playground. The line was so well accepted that
they formed the company called PLAYAWAY TOY CO. INCORPORATED and started
selling the product to major catalog retailers. After about a year into the business,
the line took a turn into the Exceptional Needs market. Parents with autistic
children found their products to be very useful educational toys.
To these children, the swing was not just a want, it was a necessity.
At this point, the brothers started designing attachments that could
perform multiple tasks with a single piece of equipment. Rather than a
parent having to purchase multiple items, they designed items that were
interchangeable. Their items quickly became the #1 selling product line
in the exceptional needs industry. As the brothers were still learning about
the exceptional needs industry, exceptional needs book authors and
others who were interested in what they were doing came on board to promote the
products they were developing. Award after award was showered on them from the
Kids Foundation to the Spiral Foundation. Autism and Exceptional Needs
became such a focus for them that they designed and donated the Si-Lab chairs
that were used to establish a national protocol for the study of Sensory Processing Disorder.
As
they look into the future, the new products they are looking to release in 2012
are: Phantom Alley, Door Jammers, Wolf Pac Air hockey, and the My Room
Organizers. With every product they manufacture, their commitment to
the highest quality craftsmanship will remain including the materials
and products being Made in America.
